Restarting my purpose in my 40s

Going back to school in your 40s is a different kind of journey. You’re not just a student. You’re a parent, a provider, a problem-solver and sometimes the emotional anchor for everyone around you. You’re writing papers after putting kids to bed, studying between responsibilities and showing up to class while life is still happening in full force. The bills don’t go on holiday, responsibilities don’t pause, everything is moving at the speed of light and exhaustion is often part of the package. But so is purpose. There’s something powerful about choosing growth at this stage of life. It’s not about proving anything to anyone. It’s about evolving and building something that aligns with who you’re becoming. For me, it’s also about stability. Life has required me to press “restart” more times than I care to admit and at this stage, I’m determined to build something that lasts. That determination is what keeps me hanging in there, even when it feels tough. Yes, it’s challenging. Yes, it requires sacrifice but it also comes with a deep sense of clarity and determination that younger students may not yet understand. If you’re young and have the opportunity, don’t postpone the work—do it now while you have the energy, time, and fewer responsibilities weighing on you. Life has a way of becoming fuller and more demanding as the years go by, and what seems manageable today can feel much heavier later but if you’re like me, navigating this journey after 40, juggling responsibilities, children, bills, and a whole world of commitments, don’t give up. Keep pushing, keep showing up for yourself, even on the hard days. The road may be longer and tougher, but there is still light at the end of the tunnel, and every step forward is proof that it’s never too late to keep building the life you want. To everyone walking this path — juggling children, work, responsibilities, and still daring to dream — keep going. Your resilience is the real degree.
