Why I Stopped Paid Employment

Image
Claudia  I stopped paid employment because you can hardly satisfy a Nigerian employer if you're not suffering on the job. Most organisations here have toxic work culture. People carry their seniority mentality from secondary school into the workplace. I used to overwork (that's literally how we work here). Do all that and more.  While working for Nigerian firms, I thought hardwork was good work till I started working with a Ghanaian firm where you get upto 2weeks to deliver one article yet they pay on time. I shock! A Nigerian company will expect you to deliver 5 to 10 contents (articles) in a week.  How?....& for what? Worst still, if you have a terrible superior your work may never pass. It's more like a "dog eat dog" situation where correction is not done with "your growth" in mind. You'll be feeling drained and looking overused and abused all the time. That's why their HR be like "can you work under pressure?" As if it's a g...

People Grow-up, People Change, Let The Past Be!

Image
Life is a journey! Yesterday's experience helped shape today's behaviour. Everyone has a history and it's only wise to understand where someone is coming from in order to understand the journey, direction and aspirations. This would help you to identify redflags such as patterns and toxic traits in the person.  I would not hold brief for a toxic partner or overlook bad behaviour rather I'll address them and put them in check but in doing so be careful to not become the demon you're trying to conquer.  The manner in which we approach issues has a huge impact of the outcome (actions & reactions).  You might ruin a beautiful thing by digging too deep into the past. Let their present personality and reality guide "the future" of your relationship.  Giving the circumstance at the time they behaved/acted/reacted in a particular manner they may not have better ideas as to how to deal better but overtime, people begin to have perspective shift and mental ...

Is the Lagos state one-way and forfeiture law justified?

Image
This one-way and issue of forfeiture in Lagos state is likely going to end up being a tool for oppression - Claudia. We are quick to introduce laws without weighing in on all sides of the matter first to identify loopholes and tighten all lose ends to ensure that the law can be sustained. Forfeiture for way-one way traffic offense is good only if government had first put in the work of marking routes and installing cameras. If not, how do they intend to prove these cases? Perhaps they do not intend to prove anything, they just want to seize and auction cars.  Anything to make the masses cry out! Who are the advisers of government? LASG putting people like the (existing) LASTMA and FRSC officials who would almost strangle a passenger over seatbelt offense, who would jump on moving vehicles to prove a point or beat a driver to coma just to flex power is a dangerous move. Where there are no clearly marked or labelled roads and CCTV cameras to prove the law has been broken, how ...

Online Passport Application: My NIS Experience

Image
Nigerian Passport As "Nigerians" we (naturally) shy away from using government agency portals or online platforms. Many would say that the portals do not work and they make things more difficult. Others would not even bother to try because as far as they are concerned it's all make believe. Personally, I do not subscribe to herd mentality. I keep an open-mind approach to everything. I prefer to test and see and speak from my own experience. Based on this, (also due to dwindling resources post-covid-era) I decided that this year, I will not pay any extras. I would try the portals and see how it goes. Recently, I have tried the FRSC portal for renewal of driving licence, Ikeja electric portal for KYC and prepaid meter application, NIMC for identity card enrollment and most recently, the NIS for my international (travel) passport renewal. I had asked around and was told to prepare to pay between 40k to 50k for 32page passport with 5 years validity. I'd also read about ot...
